Welcome to Vinpearl Safari, we are now at American Flamingo lake and going to explore interesting features of this animal together.
There are 6 species of flamingos in the world such as greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, Chilean flamingo, Andean flamingo, James’ (or puna) flamingo, and the last one is American (or Caribbean) flamingo. Currently, Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc is taking care of and preserving the American flamingo- the flamingo with the most brilliant pinkish-red plumage. Flamingos have the ability to absorb and metabolize beta-carotene which founded in foods such as shrimp, carrots, etc, and giving their plumage has a beautiful pink color. They usually spend most of the day grooming their feathers.
Flamingo are sleeping while they are standing on one leg to save energy and keep their bodies warm. The structure of the flamingo’s beak is very special, they are not straight, but slightly curved downward in the bird. The flamingo ducks its beak into the water and open its upper beak to let the water in when they find food. Then close the beak and use the tongue to push the water and mud out, while the layer of lithium teeth on the edge of the beak is responsible for filtering and keeping the tiny shrimp or plankton in the mouth.

During the breeding season, flamingos often use mud to build a basin-shaped nest with 30-60 cm high, both male and female will build the nest together and take care of the young. Newborn flamingos are grayish-white, then gradually turn pink-orange as they get mature.
Living together in the flamingo area, there are also other water birds such as painted stork, stork,… The space is designed completely open so that waterfowl can freely fly around this area. When visiting Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc, it’s really easy to see the painted stork flying in flocks in the sky or standing sunbathing on the roofs of huts. At the eating time, they will fly back to the lake to look for food, their main food is fish.
