2. What to know about the history of Ben Dinh War Tunnels?

War tunnels played a significant part of Southern Vietnam’s efforts to fight against invaders in the 20th century. After the Dong Khoi uprising, by 1967, the tunnel-digging movement in the area underwent robust development, especially in Nhuan Duc Commune. The commune boasted an interconnected tunnel system across four hamlets: Bau Tran, Xom Bung, Ba Thien, and Ben Dinh.

Ben Dinh War Tunnels’ strategic location offered a secure retreat in case of enemy advances. It is covered by an extensive forest spanning over 100 hectares, has elevated terrain resistant to collapse, and is in close proximity to the Saigon River. Consequently, the Cu Chi District Party Committee designated Ben Dinh as the headquarters to lead the people of Cu Chi during the fierce struggle against enemy forces from 1968 to 1975.
