According to historical records, Bich Dong Pagoda was established in 1428 as a small temple perched on the mountaintop. In 1705, two Buddhist monks, Tri Kien and Tri The, met and formed a deep bond, becoming spiritual brothers. They shared a strong devotion to Buddhism and a desire to travel together to propagate Buddhism and build temples. Recognizing the beautiful natural setting at Bich Dong, the two monks decided to halt their journey and renovate the existing temple.

In 1707, they cast a large bell that still hangs in the Dark Cave of the pagoda. Two years later, they inscribed a stone stele in Chinese characters, providing historical information about Bich Dong Pagoda. In 1774, Lord Trinh Sam visited Bich Dong Pagoda and was captivated by the panoramic view of the mountains, caves, rivers, fields, and lush greenery here. As an expression of his deep affection for the place, he named the temple “Bich Dong,” which means “Green Grotto” in Vietnamese.

4. The time-honored architecture of Bich Dong Pagoda

Bich Dong Pagoda Vietnam is composed of three main sections: the Lower Pagoda (Ha Pagoda), the Middle Pagoda (Trung Pagoda), and the Upper Pagoda (Thuong Pagoda). Each section has its distinctive features and contributes to the overall grandeur of the pagoda.

Ha Pagoda is situated at the foot of the mountain. Its architecture features five elevated compartments built on a raised foundation. The horizontal and vertical beams, as well as the rafters, are meticulously crafted from ironwood. The pagoda’s roof boasts two curved tiers with eight eaves, adding to its visual splendor. Notably, the stone columns within the pagoda are solid blocks without joints, standing tall at over 4 meters.

4.2. Middle Pagoda (Trung Pagoda)

Ascending 120 steps along a winding path from Ha Pagoda, visitors will arrive at Trung Pagoda. This pagoda possesses a unique characteristic where only the roof and entrance are visible, while the remaining structure is concealed within the mountain cave. Trung Pagoda consists of three compartments dedicated to the worship of Buddha. Carved onto the roof are two Chinese characters “Bich Dong,” as commanded by Lord Trinh Sam.

4.3. Upper Pagoda (Thuong Pagoda)

To reach the Upper Pagoda, also known as Thuong Pagoda, the highest pagoda on the mountain, visitors must climb an additional 40 stone steps along the mountainside. It is oriented to face southeast and is dedicated to the worship of Lady Buddha. Flanking the pagoda, there are two shrines called Tho Dia and Duc Son Than. Adjacent to the pagoda, there is a water tank known as the “Cam Lo water tank” of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
