Cai Bau Pagoda: A stunning coastal pagoda in Quang Ninh

07/04/2025 435 views

Perched on a hill overlooking the serene waters of Bai Tu Long Bay, Cai Bau Pagoda is one of the most stunning Buddhist temples in Quang Ninh. Known for its peaceful ambiance, breathtaking views, and rich historical significance, this sacred site offers a perfect retreat for spiritual seekers and travelers alike..

1. Overview of Cai Bau Pagoda

Cai Bau Pagoda, also known as Truc Lam Giac Tam Zen Monastery, is located in Van Don, Quang Ninh, about 65 km away from Ha Long. Nestled along the pristine shore of Bai Tu Long Bay, this sacred site is surrounded by breathtaking nature.

More than just a spiritual attraction, Cai Bau Pagoda carries historical significance, closely tied to the heroic victories of Vietnamese people in defending the northeastern border of the country. During the Tran Dynasty, this area played a crucial role in repelling Mongol invasions.

The pagoda’s exceptional location, with its back resting against the mountains and its front facing the sea, makes it one of the most scenic temples in Vietnam.

2. History of the pagoda

Cai Bau Pagoda in Quang Ninh was built on the foundations of Phuc Linh Pagoda, which dates back over 700 years to the Tran Dynasty. Over the centuries, it suffered significant damage due to historical upheavals. In the 1990s, efforts were made to restore the temple, but the renovations remained simple and lacked proper planning. In 2007, a large-scale reconstruction project began, which was entirely funded through social contributions. By 2009, the pagoda was officially reinaugurated, standing as a significant historical site and a renowned spiritual attraction in Quang Ninh.

3. What to explore in Cai Bau Pagoda?

3.1. Admire its remarkable architecture

Cai Bau Pagoda follows the traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture, featuring intricately designed structures such as a main hall, a triple-arch gate, an ancestral worship house, a bell tower, and various meditation halls. The main hall spans 6,000 square meters over two floors, housing a bronze bas-relief of Buddha Shakyamuni. On either side of the altar are statues of Manjushri (symbolizing wisdom) and Samantabhadra (symbolizing compassion). One of the most notable highlights is a towering 50-meter-tall Buddha statue standing on the mountain behind the pagoda, which adds to the site’s grandeur.

3.2. Soak in the peaceful atmosphere

Visitors to Cai Bau Pagoda can take a peaceful stroll along winding paths leading to the temple, listening to the rhythmic sound of waves from the nearby sea. The pathways are beautifully designed, lined with trees. Unlike some other tourist sites, Cai Bau Pagoda strictly prohibits disruptive activities to preserve its sacred atmosphere. Despite its modest 20-hectare area, the pagoda feels spacious and secluded, offering a perfect retreat for those seeking spiritual relaxation.

3.3. Take in the stunning views of Bai Tu Long Bay

Leaning against the mountain and facing the sea, Cai Bau Pagoda offers panoramic views of Bai Tu Long Bay. The peaceful surroundings heighten the meditative experience, as each chime of the temple bell and every chant of Buddhist scriptures seem to echo through the vast sky. From the courtyard, visitors can take in a mesmerizing vista of the seascape, where emerald waters stretch endlessly into the horizon.
