1. Things to know about the Endangered Primate Rescue Center
The Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh, is a non-profit initiative dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, breeding, researching, and preserving Vietnam’s endangered primate species. Established in 1993 through a partnership between the Frankfurt Zoological Society and Cuc Phuong National Park, the center is now managed under the Vietnam Primate Conservation Program, which is jointly operated by Zoo Leipzig and Cuc Phuong National Park.
Over 200 animals have been born at the center, some being the first of their species to be born in captivity, including the critically endangered Cat Ba langur, the Delacour’s langur, and the gray-shanked douc. Currently home to around 180 primates spanning 14 species, the center features over 50 large enclosures, including two semi-wildlife areas of forests. These enclosures prepare the animals for potential release into the wild and facilitate behavioral studies in semi-wildlife conditions. The center employs 31 staff members from both local and international backgrounds.

2. The primates cared for at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Ninh Binh
Three main species of primates are cared for at the rescue center: gibbons, langurs, and lorises.
2.1. Gibbons
Gibbons, the smallest apes, are native to the Indo-Malayan region. The center houses six of seven species of the crested gibbons (genus Nomascus) found in Vietnam. Crested gibbons are distinguished by the crest of fur on males’ crowns and their coloration – the males are black with white or orange cheeks while the females are golden. Gibbons are highly arboreal and rely entirely on intact forests; fragmentation of their habitats threatens them with food scarcity and exposes them to increased illegal hunting. All gibbon species are considered threatened according to the IUCN Red List, with crested gibbons being critically endangered.
2.2. Langurs
Another primate species cared for at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Vietnam is the langur, a leaf-eating monkey with long tails for balance and multi-chambered stomachs for digesting plant material. Langurs belong to a large primate family spanning 159 species and 23 genera across Africa, India, East, and Southeast Asia. Vietnam’s langurs are among the most endangered primates on Earth, valued by some for their use in traditional medicine, food, and entertainment. The center houses several critically endangered Vietnamese langurs, including the Delacour’s langur, Cat Ba langur, and Tonkin snub-nosed langur.
2.3. Lorises
Lorises are cute, furry, and tiny animals with large eyes. They are facing extinction due to the illegal trade of pets. Known for their slow movement and preference for tree canopy travel, lorises camouflage well in the wild and freeze when threatened. They enjoy eating insects and tree sap. At the rescue center, the keepers frequently catch insects or grasshoppers to feed the lorises. Visitors to the center can learn many fascinating facts about these endangered animals.
