Hai Phong Train Station: A must-know guide for travelers

11/05/2025 446 views

Hai Phong Train Station is a historic transportation hub located in the city of the same name. Built during the French colonial era, this train station features distinctive European-style architecture and serves as a gateway to northern Vietnam.

1. About Hai Phong Train Station: Location & history

Hai Phong Train Station is the main train station in Hai Phong, located at 75 Luong Khanh Thien Street, Ngo Quyen District. As the final stop on the Hanoi – Hai Phong passenger train line, it plays a key role in the city’s transportation network. Today, the train station operates 8 daily trips.

In addition to passenger trains, Hai Phong Railway Station also handles freight trains traveling from Hai Phong Port to other regions. Originally built by the French and opened in 1902, this train station is one of the four major stops along the 99-kilometer route connecting Hanoi and Hai Phong.

Hai Phong Train Station was also recognized as a historical site. In 1946, President Ho Chi Minh boarded a train here to go to Hanoi after returning from France. Just a month later, local forces fought against the French at the station.

2. Architectural highlights of Hai Phong Train Station

Hai Phong Station stands as a remarkable example of colonial-era architecture in Vietnam. Considered one of the most beautiful train stations left by the French, it has retained much of its original charm since its inauguration in 1902. The main building of the station has two stories, featuring large arched windows, sturdy columns, European-style decorative patterns, and a signature round clock at the center. Notably, the fireplace on the first floor is a common design element found in many French-built buildings in Hai Phong.

Inside Hai Phong Station, the original greenstone floor and iron columns that support the roof have been preserved for over a century. The first floor serves as the ticketing and waiting area, now also displaying old photographs of Hai Phong. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the second floor, where the original iron railings remain intact. Here, visitors can find antique tables and chairs used by generations of the station’s staff. The back corridor’s canopy, supported by white iron columns, adds to the station’s timeless appeal.
