Quy Nhon Cathedral is located at 122 Tran Hung Dao Street, Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province. People also call it the “Pointy Cathedral” because it has a pointy bell tower. 2. Things to know about Quy Nhon Cathedral
2.1. Quy Nhon Cathedral history
In 1924, the Eastern Diocese of Southern Vietnam was renamed the Diocese of Quy Nhon. The cathedral was located in Lang Song, Tuy Phuoc District, Binh Dinh Province, and the cathedral of the Diocese was Lang Song Minor Seminary. This seminary was built by Bishop Van Camelbeke Han in 1892 and still stands today. In 1930, Bishop Tardieu moved the cathedral to Quy Nhon, and the old Quy Nhon Church was the main cathedral. However, this church was too small. In 1938, Bishop Tardieu built a new cathedral which is now Quy Nhon Cathedral.
2.2. Quy Nhon Cathedral architecture
The Cathedral of Quy Nhon is built in the shape of a cross, measuring 57.5 meters in length and 22.6 meters in width. Two rows of columns divide the cathedral into three sections, with the central aisle spanning 8 meters in width.
The sanctuary is also 8 meters wide and 14.5 meters long, featuring five auxiliary altars behind it. The bell tower is 47.2 meters tall, housing a large bell weighing 1,800 kilograms. In 1992, a four-faced electronic clock was added to the bell tower.
The main altar, crafted from a single block of pink stone, is designed to resemble the “Holy Ark” with two sturdy round legs and placed in the sanctuary. Outside, there is a platform that is usually used for holding masses and other ceremonies.
