1. Basic information about Vietnam passport samples

1.1. Popular passport

  • Color: The old Vietnam passport color used to be green, and now the new standard passport is dark purple. It has 48 pages in total.
  • Eligibility: Issued to Vietnamese citizens (except for cases specified in Article 21 of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese citizens).
  • Validity Period:
    • A standard passport issued to individuals aged 14 and above is valid for 10 years and cannot be extended.
    • A standard passport issued to individuals below 14 years of age is valid for 5 years and cannot be extended.
    • A standard passport issued through expedited procedures has a validity of up to 12 months and cannot be extended.

1.2. Official passport

  • Color: The official Vietnam passport sample has a dark green cover and 48 pages.
  • Eligibility: Officials and civil servants as prescribed by the law on officials and civil servants; employees of public-sector organizations specified in Article 9(2) of the 2019 Law on Entry and Exit; staff of Vietnam’s overseas representative offices; state press reporters and journalists permanently stationed abroad. Spouses or children under 18 years of age of staff at Vietnam’s overseas representative offices; state press reporters and journalists permanently stationed abroad, traveling with or visiting them during their official mission.
  • Validity period: Valid for 1 to 5 years from the date of issue, with access to all countries. A one-time extension is permitted for a maximum duration of 3 years.

1.3. Diplomatic passport

  • Color: The cover is a reddish-brown color and consists of 48 pages.
  • Eligibility: Issuance to high-ranking officials of the state is regulated in Article 8 of the Law on Entry and Exit; they are allowed by competent authorities to go abroad to fulfill official duties.
  • Validity Period: Diplomatic passports have a validity period ranging from 1 year to 5 years and can be extended once for no more than 3 years.

1.4. Popular passport issued through a shortened procedure

In comparison to previous regulations, the Ministry of Public Security has introduced a model of the standard passport issued through a shortened procedure. This type of passport consists of 12 pages and has a validity period of up to 12 months.

As per Article 17 of the 2019 Law on Entry and Exit, the individuals eligible for a standard passport through the expedited procedure include:

  • Individuals traveling abroad for a definite period, losing their regular passports, and wishing to return immediately.
  • Individuals subject to a written decision on expulsion of competent authorities of their host countries and lacking passports.
  • Individuals who are required to return to the country under international treaties or agreements on repatriation.
  • Individuals granted regular passports for purposes of national defense and security.

2. General regulations for Vietnam passport specifications

The following are the general specifications you need to know when apply for Vietnamese passport:

  • The outer cover displays the national name, national emblem, and passport name. There is an electronic chip symbol on chip-embedded passports.

  • Passport dimensions correspond to ISO 7810 (ID-3) specifications, measuring 88mm x 125mm ± 0.75mm.
  • The electronic chip is installed on the back cover of chip-enabled passports.
  • The passport cover is made of durable synthetic plastic.
  • Laser technology is used to punch the numbers and characters on the passport from page 1 to the back cover.
  • All content and photographs within the passport are printed using modern technology to meet security requirements, prevent counterfeiting, and comply with ICAO standards.
