2. The milestones in the history of Pho Quang Pagoda

Pho Quang Pagoda has a history of over 70 years, having undergone several restorations and renovations.

  • 1951: The pagoda was established by the late Venerable Thich Viet Tao.
  • 1958: The abbot, Venerable Thich Tri Dung, began a full-scale reconstruction, which was completed in 1963.
  • 1975: The pagoda was temporarily managed by the Military Command of Zone 7.
  • 1998: The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee officially transferred the management of the pagoda to the Buddhist Association of Ho Chi Minh City.
  • 2000: The Buddhist Association began a complete renovation of Pho Quang Pagoda.
  • 2010: The Buddhist Association organized the restoration of the main hall and expansion of the pagoda grounds to its current state.
  • Today, it is managed by Venerable Thich Tri Quang, who oversees all pagoda activities.

3. The architectural highlights of Pho Quang Pagoda

3.1. Amitabha hall

The Amitabha hall is arranged in a very dignified manner. At the center stands a grand, meticulously carved statue of Amitabha Buddha, which is approximately 7 meters tall.

3.2. Main hall

Next to the Amitabha hall is the main hall, which is built in the architectural style of northern Vietnamese pagodas, with dragon and phoenix motifs on curved roof tiles. Inside, there is a 5-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue. From the courtyard outside the main hall, visitors can always see incense rising in front of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara statue. Flanking the main hall are the east and west wings, which consist of lecture halls for retreats, a tradition hall, guest rooms, and monks’ quarters.
