1. An overview of Quang Trung Museum

  • Address: Block 1, Phu Phong Town, Tay Son District, Binh Dinh Province
  • Opening hours: 7:00 AM – 11:30 AM | 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Quang Trung Museum, inaugurated on December 24, 1977, honors Emperor Quang Trung’s heroic role in Vietnam’s fight for independence. Located in Kien My Village, about 45 kilometers from Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, the museum showcases original historical elements, including the old family garden, an ancient well, and a 200-year-old tamarind tree. This site was once home to the famous Tay Son brothers: Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Lu, and Nguyen Hue, known as Tay Son Tam Kiet.

The museum seamlessly blends history and nature, offering a peaceful cultural space for every visitor. The impressive Quang Trung statue, Tay Son Tam Kiet Temple, artifact displays, and traditional martial arts performances make this museum a perfect destination for history lovers.

Designed in traditional Vietnamese architectural style, with curved tiled roofs and wooden columns, the museum evokes a sense of sacredness while harmonizing with the lush greenery around it. Through various exhibits in the museum, Emperor Quang Trung’s military genius, exemplified by his victory over the Qing army in 1789, is celebrated.

2. Things to do on your visit to Quang Trung Museum

A visit to Quang Trung Museum offers a chance to immerse yourself in the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Tay Son period. Here are some must-see attractions and unique experiences to try out.

2.1. Explore Tay Son Tam Kiet Temple

One of the most notable attractions at Quang Trung Museum is Tay Son Tam Kiet Temple, which honors the three Tay Son brothers and their trusted generals. The original house, built by Ho Phi Phuc and Nguyen Thi Dong, the parents of the Tay Son brothers, spanned about 100 square meters and served as the birthplace and childhood home of the brothers. Construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1960, with the temple spanning over 2,300 square meters.

The temple reflects traditional Central Vietnamese architecture, with wooden pillars, earth walls, and a thatched roof. Two living symbols of the Tay Son era—a 300-year-old tamarind tree and an ancient well—stand as enduring testaments to the family’s legacy. Having undergone several renovations, the shrine was designated as a special national heritage site by the Ministry of Culture in 2014.

Additionally, visitors can explore other attractions within the Quang Trung Museum complex, including Admiral Bui Thi Xuan, Vo Van Dung, and the parents of the Tay Son brothers. These sacred spaces preserve the memory of Vietnam’s heroes and offer a quiet place for reflection.

2.2. Admire the exhibition space

Inside the museum, carefully curated exhibitions take visitors through key moments in the Tay Son Rebellion and Vietnam’s 18th-century history. The displays include original swords, armor, and command flags used by Quang Trung himself, along with detailed military maps and documents chronicling his major battles, such as the famous Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da victory.

The museum’s main exhibition hall also contains artifacts related to everyday life in the Tay Son period, which showcase items from the cultural and social fabric of the time. Visitors can see how people lived, worked, and fought during this historical period, gaining a deeper understanding of the era’s significance.

2.3. Watch the Tay Son martial arts performance

A visit to Quang Trung Museum would not be complete without witnessing a traditional Tay Son martial arts demonstration. This unique performance features the distinctive Tay Son battle drums, which were created during the Tay Son Rebellion to inspire warriors in battle. The drum rhythms are divided into three phases: setting out, storming the battlefield, and celebrating victory. Accompanying the music is a demonstration of Tay Son-Binh Dinh martial arts, featuring 18 weapon forms that have been passed down through generations.

The museum hosts performances from the Bana, Cham H’roi, Jarai, and Ede ethnic communities, offering insight into the rich cultural diversity of the region. These performances, combined with a visit to the Central Highlanders’ communal house (Nha Rong), offer a deep appreciation of the cultural context in which the Tay Son Rebellion emerged.
