If you are eligible for Vietnam visa exemption, you do not need to apply for any visa exemption beforehand. As long as your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Vietnam and has sufficient blank pages, you can travel to Vietnam without a visa.

3. Things to know about Vietnam visa exemption extension

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was possible to extend Vietnam visa exemption while you are in the country. However, currently, this extension is no longer available. If someone wishes to prolong their stay in Vietnam beyond the visa exemption period, they must depart to a neighboring country, like Thailand, Cambodia, or Laos, then re-enter Vietnam with visa exemption.

4. Vietnam visa exemption for special circumstances

4.1. For those having a Vietnam 5-year visa exemption certificate

Foreigners who are spouses or children of Vietnamese overseas can get a 5-year visa exemption certificate, which allows them to enter Vietnam freely without a visa at any time within five years. This certificate will remain valid for up to five years and expires six months before the expiration date of the holder’s passport or equivalent travel documents.

Holders of this visa exemption privilege can stay in Vietnam for up to 180 days for each visit. If they wish to stay in Vietnam for more than 180 days, they have the option to extend their visa. The extension allows them to stay for an additional duration, which can be up to 6 months.

4.2. For those entering coastal economic zones

A 30-day visa exemption can be granted to individuals entering specific coastal economic zones determined by the Vietnamese government. To be eligible, these zones must meet certain criteria, including having an international airport, a defined geographical boundary separate from the mainland, and being in line with socio-economic development policies without posing a threat to Vietnam’s national defense, security, social order, and safety. 

4.3. For APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders

Holders of the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) with valid passports are exempted from Vietnam visa requirements for a stay of up to 60 days. If ABTC holders wish to stay longer in Vietnam, they can extend your visa exemption for an additional duration of up to 3 months, as long as the total duration of their visa-free stay is within 9 months. This card facilitates business travel within APEC member economies, and Vietnam is one of the countries that offer visa exemption for ABTC holders.
