2. The meanings of Cantonese Assembly Hall’s names throughout the time

From the 15th to the 19th century, Hoi An was considered one of the busiest trading ports in Vietnam. Therefore, this place attracts a large number of Chinese people to work and live. Thanks to this prosperous development, assembly halls were built one after another. Now, there are a total of 5 such halls in Hoi An.

In addition to being a place of spiritual worship, the hall was also a place for collective exchange of the Cantonese community in Hoi An at that time. They often met to do business and help each other with their daily life.

The most commonly known name of this hall is Cantonese Assembly Hall. This place also has other names such as Assembly Hall of the Cantonese Chinese Congregation, Quang Trieu Assembly Hall, Quang Trieu Pagoda or Ong Pagoda.

3. The unique architecture of Hoi An Cantonese Assembly Hall

Cantonese Assembly Hall features a Chinese architectural style. On the roof, there are yin and yang tiles and a dragon carving. An interesting thing about the construction of the hall is that most of the parts of the hall were made in China, transported by boat, and fully assembled in Hoi An.

In addition, the hall still preserves a lot of extremely valuable artifacts that clearly show the migration process and trading activities of the Chinese people in Hoi An many centuries ago. Some prominent examples are figures, ceramic paintings, relics, etc.

3.1. The three-door entrance gate

Standing at the entrance, you will see that the gate is made of stones and carved with figures of legendary creatures such as Chinese dragon, phoenix, unicorn, etc.

After passing this three-door gate, you will come to a front yard with stone walls. In the middle of the courtyard of Assembly Hall, there is a dragon fountain that was built according to the legend about a fish turning into a dragon.

The garden here is spacious and decorated with many ornamental plants. There is a communal house in the middle, two rows of houses on both sides. After the front yard comes the main hall and the backyard.

3.2. The main hall

The main hall is divided into 3 sections including: The middle space which is used to worship Guan Yu (a talented general of China) and his two horses, the other two sections are used to worship the God of Land and the God of Wealth.

The main hall is designed majestically and solemnly with a massive system of solid pillars made from precious old trees. The most prominent feature of the main hall is the statues that are delicately carved with brilliant colors which have not faded after so many years.

3.3. The backyard

Located behind the main hall, the backyard can be reached via the two pathways on the sides of the main hall. This area is very spacious with many shady trees. Similar to the front yard, the backyard also has a fountain with dragon carving. The wall behind the main hall is also carved with a delicate and meticulous painting of Guan Yu.

4. Experience the age-old festivals at Cantonese Assembly Hall

In Hoi An, there are 2 major festivals held annually which are especially meaningful for the Chinese people who have lived here for a long time.

  • Nguyen Tieu festival

Nguyen Tieu holiday takes place on the full moon day of the first lunar month every year, usually lasting from 2 to 3 days. The holiday has great spiritual significance. On this day, people often buy all sorts of offerings, pray for peace in life and prosper in business.

Nguyen Tieu festival is held on a large scale with many traditional activities such as performing lion dances, singing, and setting off firecrackers.

  • Quan Cong festival

Quan Cong festival is held on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month every year at Quan Cong Temple located at No. 24, Tran Phu street.

This is a big religious festival for Hoi An people. The offerings prepared for the festival are quite elaborate and meticulous. After the festival, procession activities make the streets even more vibrant.
