2. The legend of Dau Go Cave, Ha Long Bay

There are three narratives that attempt to explain the origin of Dau Go Cave’s name.

Legend has it that during a 13th-century battle against Mongol forces in Ha Long Bay, General Tran Hung Dao strategically placed wooden stakes to take down the enemy’s boats. This clever tactic played a pivotal role in securing a victorious outcome. The cave retained many of these wooden stakes, prompting the locals to name it “Giau Go Cave” (Hidden Wood Cave), which eventually became “Dau Go” (Wood Cave).

Another tale suggests that prior to Dau Go Cave, there existed a set of Wood Islands resembling a bow. This formation created a wind-sheltering spot where fishermen would seek refuge during storms. During their stay, the fishermen repaired their boats and left behind numerous pieces of wood, giving rise to the name Dau Go Cave. A third story says that the Wood Islands looked like a massive wooden pestle from afar, which inspired the name “Dau Go.”

The truth behind the cave’s unique name remains uncertain. Nevertheless, these tales have added an air of mystery, making Dau Go Cave even more appealing for travelers.
