1. About Hai Van Pass Vietnam

Hai Van Pass is located between Thua Thien Hue province and Da Nang city, about 80 kilometers away from the former and 20 kilometers away from the latter. This winding pass stretches along the majestic Bach Ma mountain range and is a part of Truong Son range.

The pass is more than 20 kilometers long and is 500 meters above sea level. Surrounded by green forests, this is one of the most beautiful coastal passes in the world, a masterpiece of nature bestowed on Vietnam.

It is not an easy task to get to Hai Van Pass due to the sharply winding roads along the mountainside. However, the closer you get to the top of the pass, the more you will be overwhelmed by the beautiful natural scenery.

From here, visitors can zoom out into the distance and take in the whole magnificent natural view, with majestic mountains on one side and the immense sea on the other.

The best periods of the day for you to admire the scenery of the pass are around dawn (4 – 6 am) and nightfall (4 – 6 pm). If you come here at this time, you will be able to take even more beautiful pictures; in addition, Hai Van Pass weather is also cooler than at other times of the day.

2. The history of Hai Van Pass Da Nang

  • Before 1306, the land around the pass belonged to the kingdom of Champa
  • In 1306, the king of Champa forfeited this area as a wedding gift to princess Huyen Tran of the Tran dynasty. The pass officially became the boundary between Champa and Vietnam.
  • In 1402, the Ho Dynasty held a campaign against Champa. The Champa king surrendered the land of Chiem Dong and Co Luy. Hai Van Pass officially became a property of Vietnam.
  • On June 5, 2005, the tunnel through the pass was put into use. It is more than 12 kilometers long and is the longest road tunnel in Southeast Asia.
  • Although there is already a tunnel through the pass, the challenging winding pass is still an attractive place for many tourists, especially bikers.

3.2. Van Village at the foot of the pass

Van Village is a small village nestled at the foot of the pass. Located in a peaceful, secluded and unspoiled area, this place is likened to a “forgotten land” in the bustling city of Da Nang. The village is separate from the city, so it is perfect for you to rest and relax far away from the noisy streets.

Camping and enjoying a BBQ together is the most popular experience in Van Village. It would be ideal to sit by the romantic beach, breathe in the fresh air and look at the starry night sky. In addition, you can also immerse yourself in the cool, clear blue sea or try canoeing in the village.

3.3. North Hai Van Railway Station
