2. The history of Khanh An Monastery

Established as a modest temple in 1905 by Master Tri Hien, Khanh An Monastery has a rich history deeply intertwined with Vietnam’s struggle for independence. The monastery served as a gathering place for patriots engaged in the resistance against French colonial rule. Despite enduring numerous assaults by the colonial forces, the monastery persevered, with its remnants often reduced to mere makeshift structures of bamboo or brick.

In 2006, extensive renovations transformed the monastery into its current state, nearly rebuilding it from the ground up. By 2016, the monastery had undergone a remarkable transformation, culminating in its renaming as Khanh An Monastery, symbolizing its enduring legacy in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

3. What is Khanh An Monastery famous for?

3.1. Time-honored history

During the resistance movement, Khanh An Monastery served as a refuge for revolutionary fighters. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Southern Vietnam saw the emergence of secretive anti-colonial patriots. Among them was Thich Tri Hien, also known as Le Van Phan, who played a pivotal role. For his contributions, he was given approximately 80 hectares of land to establish the monastery – a sanctuary opposing French occupation. In July 1939, it hosted the inaugural meeting of A Communist Party cell with nine members. Under the leadership of the Party, a robust revolutionary movement flourished in the region.

3.2. Impressive architecture

Although Khanh An Monastery’s architecture seems to be inspired by Japanese influence, it is entirely rooted in the traditional Vietnamese temple design. The vibrant hues of red from brick, gray from smoke, and white from lime are reminiscent of familiar Vietnamese styles. Unlike other temples in the region which are adorned with colorful dragon and phoenix motifs, the monastery embodies the refined aesthetics of the Vietnamese imperial court.

3.2.1. The main hall

The monastery comprises two main buildings: the main hall and the precinct with a community hall. The main hall, known as the “Path to Awakening,” features a wooden structure where monks and practitioners gather for meditation. Stone steps intricately carved with lotus patterns lead to the main hall. Its tiled roof, layered and adorned with lanterns, stands amidst lush greenery of trees and flowers, accentuated by lantern posts.
