In the past, the grounds of Botanical Gardens Hanoi (Bach Thao Park) were vacant. Taking advantage of a large lake and many green trees in the area, the French built a park right next to West Lake in 1890.

During that time, French scientists collected many precious native plants from the North to the South to bring to Botanical Gardens Hanoi. At the same time, they tried to grow many plants and flowers that originated from around the world.

Along the pathways in Botanical Gardens Hanoi, the French also placed many animal cages, which is the reason why this place was once known as Botanical Zoo or Hanoi Zoo. After that, all the animals were transferred to Thu Le Zoo and Saigon Zoo, and the park became a true garden once more.
