As one of the oldest streets in Ho Chi Minh City, this book street has been renamed many times. During the early French colonial period, it was called Hong Kong Street. In 1897, it was renamed Cardis Street. In 1955, the name was changed to Nguyen Hau. 

In 2000, the street was renamed Nguyen Van Binh after a Catholic spiritual leader of the same name. Therefore, the name of Nguyen Van Binh Book Street also shows an appreciation for religion, in addition to knowledge.

Near Saigon Central Post Office, Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Saigon. It has been holding great significance to the religious life of Catholic adherents in the south of Vietnam. Constructed between 1863 and 1880 by the French, the church reaches a height of up to 60 meters. 

The highlight of this church is the stained-glass windows depicting the Saints and stories in the Bible. In addition, it is one of the few churches in Vietnam that has a real pipe organ.
