1. Things to know about the history of National Day in Vietnam

The National Day in Vietnam, also known as Independence Day of Vietnam, is observed on September 2 annually. To know the origin and history of the National Day in Vietnam, we need to travel back in time a bit.

In 1858, French colonizers conquered Vietnam and made this nation one of its colonies. In 1897, France created the Federation of Indochina, dividing Vietnam into areas with independent governments. Vietnam became a part of French Indochina until the Japanese coup d’état during the last days of World War II.

After Japan’s capitulation in World War II on August 15, 1945, an uprising for national independence in Vietnam promptly started. The People’s Revolutionary Committees took over administrative positions throughout both cities and suburbs in the country. This uprising was termed The August Revolution.

Following this victory, on September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed Vietnam’s independence at Ba Dinh Square, Hanoi. The day remains the National Day of Vietnam until today.

Over 400,000 compatriots witnessed this significant moment at Ba Dinh Square on that day. This declaration affirmed the freedom and independence of Vietnam to not only the attendees but also the whole world.

Observed annually, the National Day in Vietnam is an opportunity for next Vietnamese generations to remember the nation’s difficult and heroic journey, foster their patriotism, and commit themselves to their motherland.
