Because of terrain, the weather conditions in Vietnam vary in different regions at the same time. While it may be the rainy season in Vietnam in one region, the other parts of the country might be experiencing clear blue skies and lots of sunshine. It is always better to take a Vietnam travel journey on sunny days, but if you happen to be in this country during its rainy days, do not worry. There are always fun things for you to do.

1. When is rainy season in Vietnam? How different is it in the 3 regions?

Because of the special terrain, the regions in Vietnam experience different weather conditions during the same period of time. The case is the same with the rainy season in Vietnam.

How often does it rain in Vietnam? When does rainy season end in Vietnam?

As a tropical country affected by monsoons, Vietnam experiences lots of rain throughout the year. However, there is no exact schedule for the rainy season in Vietnam. Below are the details about Vietnam rainy season in three different regions: the Northern, the Central, and the Southern regions.

1.1. The rainy season in North Vietnam

Northern Vietnam is characterized by tropical monsoon weather. There are four distinct seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. It is hot in summer and chilly in winter. The rainy season in Hanoi Vietnam and other northern areas typically begins in May and lasts until October. From June to August are the wettest months of the year with the highest rainfall.

It is hence advisable to visit Northern Vietnam during winter and spring, as the dry and cool weather is ideal for travel. However, many tourists still choose to head to this region in the summer months. Tourism activities are still carried out, but in the case of Halong Bay, cruises might be delayed or even canceled when it rains too heavily or if there is a storm.

1.2. The rainy season in Central Vietnam

The rainy season in Vietnam begins in September and lasts through December in the North Central Coast (Quang Binh, Hue). The rainy season reaches its peak in October and November, frequently accompanied by severe storms and floods. During the rainy season, the average temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius.

In South Central (Danang, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan), the dry season tends to last longer, from January to September. The rainy season in Danang Vietnam and other South Central provinces starts in mid-October and lasts until early December.

During the rainy season in Vietnam Central region, some activities are often avoided. For instance, you cannot enter Phong Nha Cave during the rainy season due to the flooding of Son River, which may block the entrance. However, a few dry caves, such as Tien Son Cave and Paradise Cave, are still accessible and open to tourists.

1.3. The rainy season in South Vietnam

The rainy season in Vietnam Southern region is often from May to October. However, you should note that the weather in Southern Vietnam can change suddenly. For instance, you might be caught off guard when heavy rain suddenly batters Saigon in March. From June to September, there could be periods of heavy rain, also.

If you happen to visit Ho Chi Minh City during the rainy season in Saigon Vietnam, you will see how delighted the local people are with rain, as long as it does not result in flooding. It may pour for a little while, stop, then continue to rain all day long.

The case is the same with the Mekong Delta. This region looks spectacular during the flood season, but you had better be aware since there will be mosquitos everywhere.
