1.2. History

The bridge was constructed during the reign of King Tu Duc to connect the bank of Hoan Kiem Lake to Ngoc Son Temple. At first, the bridge was simply made of wood. Over the long history of Vietnam, the bridge has been renovated twice. The first time was in 1897 during the reign of King Thanh Thai. The second time was in 1952 when an exceedingly large number of visitors caused a span break. As a consequence, the bridge had to be reconstructed and reinforced with concrete.

2. The architectural significance of The Huc Bridge Hanoi

Initially, the wooden The Huc Bridge had 15 spans and 32 columns arranged in 16 pairs. After the renovation, the bridge still retained its original shape but the curvature was replaced with a larger one. The bridge is colored in radiant red, with the words ‘The Huc’ carved in gold.

The design of this bridge was greatly influenced by the traditional architectural style of the Northern Delta region. Following folk beliefs, this famous bridge in Hanoi was considered a symbol of life, as it was constructed facing the east to celebrate the first rays of sun. Its red color also symbolizes luck.
