To prepare for a journey to this country, it is imperative that you know about Vietnam location, attractions, nature, people, and culture. Take some top suggestions to plan your Vietnam trip so as not to miss anything fun.

1. What is Vietnam location on the world map?

Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia, on the Eastern edge of the peninsula known as Indochina. Its neighbors include China in the north, Laos and Cambodia in the west. The country faces the East Sea in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the south. Vietnam location plays an important role in the region.

1.1. Vietnam topography

Vietnam location makes its topography very diverse with mountains, hills, plains, coasts and continental shelves, which is the result of a tectonic process in the past. The topography is lower from northwest to southeast, which makes almost all the rivers in Vietnam flow in this direction.

Three quarters of the country are mountains and hills, with 85 percent of them being low mountains of under 1,000 metres high. Only 1 percent of the mountains have a height of over 2,000 metres.

The Red River Delta makes up most of the Northern region of the country. In the northwest, there are mostly high mountains and highlands, with Fansipan being the highest mountain of Indochina (3,143 metres high).

The Central region of Vietnam consists of the Central Highlands in the west and various small coastal plains in the east. In the Southern region, the Mekong Delta, the largest plain of Vietnam, covers an area of 40,000 square kilometres.

On the sea of Vietnam, there are many big and small islands. There are over 3,000 islands in the vicinity of Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, Cat Ba Island and Bach Long Vi Island. Besides, Vietnam has 2 offshore archipelagos namely Truong Sa Archipelago (Spratly Islands) and Hoang Sa Archipelago (Paracel Islands).

1.2. Vietnam climate

Based on Vietnam location, the typical climate of the country features a tropical monsoon with high temperatures and humidity. Vietnam has a diverse climate due to the difference in latitudes and longitudes.

There are 4 distinct seasons in the north, namely spring, summer, autumn, and winter. When the northeastern monsoon is active (between November and March), the winter comes with cold and dry weather.

The weather in the south is much warmer due to being less influenced by the monsoon. There are 2 distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Temperatures remain high all year round.

The weather also varies depending on altitudes. In mountainous and hilly areas like Sa Pa (in Lao Cai Province) and Da Lat (in Lam Dong Province), the weather is mild.
