During your Hanoi travel journey, besides visiting famous tourist attractions, wandering around Hang Da Market should be one of the top activities on your bucket list. Here, you can savor the local cuisine, purchase special souvenirs for your loved one, and gain greater insight into the daily life of the locals.

1. Where is Hang Da Market Hanoi Vietnam?

  • Address: No 1, Hang Da Street, Cua Dong Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

Situated in the heart of Hanoi capital city, Hang Da Market has been one of the most important trading points of Hanoi for a long time. The market is also located near many other tourist attractions, including Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, Vietnamese Women’s Museum.

There are numerous means of transportation that tourists can choose from to get here, such as bus, taxi, car, and motorbike. If you use personal vehicles, you can park them in the spacious basement of Hang Da Market.

Compared to Dong Xuan Market – the symbol of Hanoi Old Quarter, Hang Da Market is smaller. However, there is no lack of retail products in this market. Fresh food, wine, flowers, clothing, and fabric are the most prominent products here.

2. The summary of the history of Hang Da Market Hanoi

“Hang Da” in Vietnamese means “leather store”. During the early 20th century, the French administration named the street where Hang Da Market is now located as Rue des Cuirs. Only a few overseas Chinese tanners in the suburbs came here to build warehouses for raw materials. The people who bought raw leather here were often craftsmen from other streets in Hanoi.

It was not until 1937 that the market was built. It did not sell leather goods, but mainly sold groceries. On March 9, 1945, the street and its market were officially named Hang Da. At the end of 1946, the market was totally destroyed when the fierce fight between the Vietnamese army and French troops broke out.

Entering the new millennium, Hang Da Market was rebuilt as a commercial center. Nowadays, there are only a few stores at the market selling leather products; most traders sell electrical goods, fashion items, etc. instead.

3. What to buy on a shopping trip at Hang Da Market?

Even though the charming capital city of Hanoi has many large traditional markets and shopping malls, Hang Da Market still retains its position as one of the best places to shop in the city. It is a three-story shopping mall that houses an eclectic array of stalls on each floor.

3.1. In the basement

The basement of Hang Da Market is a great place for locals and tourists to buy fresh seafood, including fish, clam, squid, and crab in the morning when they have just been transported from some nearby coastal cities. The seafood here is frequently displayed in large plastic bowls with oxygen tubes placed inside to keep the sea creatures alive until they are bought. Besides, you can find a wide variety of fresh vegetables and tropical fruits, such as durians, watermelons, pineapples, and coconuts sold here at reasonable prices.

The clothes on offer are surprisingly available in all sizes because the majority of them are imported from all over the world, so you can surely find something that fits you.
