In the Hai Phong News, it was reported: “A dragon appeared on Ha Long Bay.” The story goes as follows: In 1898, Lieutenant Lagrédin, captain of the ship Avalangso, along with many sailors, encountered a pair of gigantic sea snakes in Ha Long Bay. Europeans likened these creatures to the dragons in the imagination of Asians. Because of the appearance of this strange dragon-like creature, this maritime area was named Ha Long Bay.

More specifically, during a foreign invasion, the heavens sent a mother dragon, accompanied by a flock of dragon offspring, to help the Vietnamese fight against the invaders. As enemy ships from the sea relentlessly attacked the coast, the dragons created countless jade gemstones, which transformed into myriad towering stone islands that linked together like an impregnable fortress wall and halted the advance of the enemy.

The enemy ships, racing forward, crashed into the rocky islands, shattering into pieces. After the enemy was defeated, the mother dragon and her offspring did not return to the heavens but stayed in the earthly realm where the battle had taken place. The spot where the mother dragon descended became known as Ha Long, while the spot where the dragon offspring landed became Bai Tu Long. The flailing tails of the dragons, creating white foam, formed Long Vi, which is the Tra Co Peninsula in the present-day city of Mong Cai.
